Three Little Pig Houses

We have been reading lots of different fairytales and thinking of ways the characters could solve the problems in the story. The Three Little Pigs had a problem- the pigs' houses weren't strong enough so the wolf blew it down.
We used hay, sticks and bricks to build houses. We tried lots of different ways to make the houses strong. Mrs H and Miss Patel were so impressed with how we showed determination when our first ideas didn't work.

Can you see that naughty Big Bad Wolf that
was trying to blow down our houses?

Working together so well
Mark #3...determination!

One idea

Discussed and changed to make this house.
The Big Bad Wolf couldn't blow it down.
Isaiah taught us triangles make things strong.
A very strong brick house.

Building a house out of hay is tricky, but the builders never gave  up.

The Big Bad Wolf could only blow a few sticks off this house.

The Nogard

We have been learning to make a picture in our head when we read.

We read about the Nogard. We used the clues to make a picture in our head. It helped us understand what sort of creature a Nogard is. None of us had ever heard of a Nogard. Have you?

We used the clues to draw in Paint.

Here is the piece of writing about a Nogard
A Nogard is an animal. It has an oval shaped body.It has a long neck and tail. The top of the neck, back and tail are covered with a row of triangle shaped plates. The Nogard's head is shaped like a long triangle. It has big eyes and eyebrows that stick out. It also has big nostrils. It's body is covered in scales. The Nogard has four short legs. At the end of each leg there is a foot with five toes. Each toe has a sharp claw at the end. The Nogard has two wings attached to its body. Nogards are usually green but change to a deep purple in the winter months.

Human Tally Marks

We have been learning to use tally marks to record information. We have learnt that tally marks are in bundles of 5. The 5th mark we use to tie the bundle together. We used human tally marks to work out how many children were at school.

We skip counted in 5s and counted on 2 more to find out how many children were at school.

Imaginations

We thought about something we would love to do or somewhere we would love to be. We made our pictures on Pic Collage. The Kidd-li-winks love their pictures. There has been lots of laughing and amazed gasps.

I went to the beach and a horse came racing past it splashed water at me. Splish...splash, splish...splash. It became my friend. I hopped on the horse. It was smooth. I said "Giddy up". Me and my new friend went walking on the dry sand. We went to see if someone was riding a horse. We went over the mountains and through the gorges and over the tree stumps. We went home at last. When we got home the horse could not fit in the door way. I pushed and pushed but it still didn't go in but... it farted in my face so I quickly pushed and it squeezed through. "I think I am allowed to keep the horse".

I was getting ready to climb Mount Everest. Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. While I was walking up Mount Everest I puffed then I stopped to have a rest because I was so tired. At last I got to the top of Mount Everest I said "yahhhooooo!" I was shivering and my heart was beating because I was on top of the world.

Mrs Hill brought Chester to my vet because he kept on vomiting because he ate too much underpants and socks. I got the stethoscope to see if his heart was still beating. I got the x-ray to see if he was eating underpants and socks. The x-ray showed that there was two pairs of underpants and two pairs of socks. I got them out with green slime because it helps them to poo them out. When it came out it looked like slimy green diarrhoea. When he was better he went home and Mrs Hill decided to pick up her underpants and her socks and never leave them on the ground again.

I am holding on to my grizzly bear with my hands tightly. The water is making a wave around my grizzly bear splashing water on my shoes as well. A fish flew out of the water into the bears mouth and the bear chomped on the fish. The fish was gone and we played hide and seek with all the other grizzly bears in the dark woods. We hid in the dragons cave and we stayed in there playing paper, scissors, rock. I got paper and my grizzly bear got scissors then the dragon woke up and fire came out of  his mouth! I leapt onto my bear and we ran away fast to tell all the grizzly bears to race back to the water.

Different Graphs

We are starting to learn about different graphs. We are learning to read and understand graphs.
Today we made a water graph about Our Favourite Colours.

Each of us chose our favourite colour and added 1/4 of a cup of coloured water to the jar and this is the graph we created. We talked about how we all had to put in the same amount of water to make the graph accurate.

Together we decided the graph told us
-The red jar was the most full so red is Room 5's favourite colour.
-The green jar was the least full so it was Room 5's least favourite colour.
-Lots of children liked blue but not as many as red.

What else does the graph tell you?

We made a graph to find out the types of books we would like to read in our classroom. We created this graph together.
This graph was very useful because we took it to Miss Sampson in the library so she could help us find books we wanted to read.

Kady and Beau showing Miss Sampson our graph.

Now we have lots of scary books and once upon a time books in our class library, quite a few animal books, some non-fiction books and a funny book.

Angry Verbs- Part 2

We worked with our buddies to complete our Angry Verbs. Mr M and Mrs H were very impressed with how well we worked together.

We are going to use the verbs on our birds in our writing. Using verbs in our writing helps to make a movie in the readers head.

We have been learning that when we add 'ed' to a word it means it has already happened. Another trick we learnt is when we add 'ing' we drop the 'e'. An example is come. You take the e off to make coming.
Can you see any of the tricks on our learning bird?
Thank you to our buddy class for working with us. Click on the link to see their post about Angry Verbs.

Penpal Letters

What an exciting day! We were sent letters from America. We each got a colourful envelope from Grade 5 children in America ( they were the children Miss Patel taught before she came to Room 5).
We are opening up our envelopes to see who our penpal is.

LIvy  reading her letter from her penpal

We are now busy writing letters back to our penpals. We have to read the letters carefully because our penpals asked questions for us to answer. Some of us found things that were the same with us and our penpal.

Angry Verbs

We have been working with our buddy class Room 16 to learn about verbs. Super verbs help paint a picture for the reader when we are writing.

We went out with our buddy class with lots of different PE gear. While we were playing with our buddies we came up with a whole lot of verbs.

2013-01-29 00.59.39 2013-01-29 01.00.55 2013-01-29 01.01.24 2013-01-29 01.03.37 2013-01-29 01.11.48 2013-01-29 01.13.34

We got back together with our buddies and watched some Angry Birds and came up with verbs for the birds and piggies What verbs can you think of when you watch this trailer?

Here are the verbs Room 5 and 16 came up with together.
