Fun in Napier

The Kidd-li-winks had so much fun in Napier. As well as having lots of fun the Kidd-li-winks challenged themselves in different ways. Enjoy some of the photos from our experience.

Which fraction is bigger?

We have been learning about the size of fractions and which one would weigh more. We learnt to make a picture in our head of the fraction and imagine which one would be bigger.

Teague asked a great question
Why is the number bigger but the fraction smaller?

Listen to the Fotobabbles we created and our thinking about fractions and their size.

Listen to Teague's thinking. This maths is weird! He does mean 1/4 and not 4/4.

Character Clues

The Magic Key Series is a real favourite in Room 5. The children have read many many different magic key adventure stories.
Bottomly Potts re-read the stories to create character clues for others to guess who their character is. The character clues couldn't be too easy but needed enough information for people to read the stories and figure out who it is.
Can you guess the characters?

Science is so much fun

The Kidd-li-winks love science so much.

We started off with 1/4 of a cup of liquid hand soap and mixed in 3/4 of a cup of warm water.

Next we stirred in 2 tablespoons of baking soda.

After that we stirred in 2 tablespoons of citric acid. The more we stirred it the bigger and more bubbly it got.
It was a chemical reaction!
It was carbon dioxide making the bubbles.
Soon it was time to play.

 Bubbles bubbles everywhere!

And we made funny noises

and drew pictures and wrote our names.

This experiment was a bonus because it cleaned our tables. They are sparkling clean.

As requested by the children I have put the amounts needed so they can do the experiments at home.

Mixing colours

Mixing lots of different yellows
We have been learning to mix paints to make new colours and light, dark and medium colours.
Red and white make pink
Mixing different browns
Mixing in little areas

Words with the ar sound

We have been finding it tricky to write the 'ar' sound in words and reading the 'ar' sound in words. Hercules Morse made some pic collages to help us with this. They found words in their reading books and from around our room.

Carbon Dioxide

We have been learning about carbon dioxide.
We tasted normal water from the tap
We made predictions about what would happen if we added carbon dioxide to the water. We are getting good at using our prior knowledge to make predictions.

Pushing the button to add carbon dioxide. It made lots of farting noises.

When we put carbon dioxide in the water we observed that it was full of bubbles.
Some of us didn't like it.

Some of us liked it a little bit.
We made lemonade. We started with lemon juice and water (they had to be equal amounts).
We tasted it.
We predicted what will happen when we added the baking soda.
Clever kids came up with A chemical reaction.
They thought this would happen because the acid (lemon) was mixing with the alkaline (base).

Lemonade Making on PhotoPeach

We ran out of time to add a very important ingredient (the sugar) to sweeten the lemonade.
I wonder if the lemonade will taste yummy with some added sugar?

Tayla's amazing writing

Tayla wrote this exciting story. It was so good I had to put it on the blog for you all to enjoy. We have been working on our endings. I just love how her ending makes me laugh.

Ding dong the school bell went and all the children went to play on the field and playground. Some people on the playground were frolicking on the slide and other people were playing duck duck goose on the field. Suddenly... an enormous fat werewolf came and shocked the kids so much that they changed into a statue. The werewolf was chasing the children that were statues around the school and trying to ask the children if they would like to play with him but they just kept on running and running everywhere! The werewolf walked off feeling crushed because no one would play with him. The werewolf said to himself "Should I just play with the cows instead?"
